April 5, 2005: South Dakota CAP Assists in Black Hills Fire Spotting and Assessment

On this date in 2005, the South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol was assisting state and federal officials in spotting fires and assessing damage in the Black Hills.

An excerpt from the Sioux City Journal:

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Dry conditions and a dry forecast make for conditions that could spark a lot of fires again in the tinder-dry Black Hills, but much of the firefighting effort going into the season is to keep the fires small. . . When a fire is spotted, fire engines and crews are dispatched immediately, as is an air tanker that can snuff out the flames, when the fire risk is high. . .  Much of the credit for keeping fires small goes to the local Civil Air Patrol. . . The volunteer CAP pilots, known best for finding missing or lost people, now take to the air when the weather and forest conditions are right for fires sparked by lightening.

April 4, 1950: Minnesota Wing's Disney "Gremlin" Patch Approved

On this date in 1950, the Minnesota Wing received approval for their "Gremlin" patch.

The origin of the patch stems from a failed Disney project during World War II.

An excerpt from incountry.us:

In a major show of patriotism, Walt Disney Productions had been creating hundreds of emblems for the American military during World War II. Shortly after Civil Air Patrol came under control and direction of the Army Air Forces, Minnesota Wing submitted a request to Disney for permission to use one of their Gremlins in an emblem. Major Horace E Read, Minnesota's second?/third? Wing Commander, announced in March 1943 that the folks at the Disney studios had agreed to get behind Minnesota Wing's request and design an emblem featuring a Gremlin.

April 3, 2008: Collier County, Florida CAP Members Assist in Rescue of Burmese Python

On this date in 2008, members of the Collier County Florida Civil Air Patrol Squadron helped rescue a really large snake.

An excerpt from the Marco (Fla.) Eagle:

An eight-foot Burmese python was rescued from the rafters of a Marco Island Executive Airport hangar Thursday, a couple of days after first being spotted on April Fools’ Day. The rescue was a collaborative effort between the Civil Air Patrol, the Marco Island and Isles of Capri fire departments and an animal rescue team from the nonprofit Everglades Outpost. The snake was spotted Tuesday by a youth cadet of the Marco Island Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol. It was curled up 30 feet into the rafters of the hangar.
