February 16, 1947: CAP National Commander Col. Earle Johnson Dies in Ohio Plane Crash

On this date in 1947, Civil Air Patrol National Commander Col. Earle L. Johnson died in plane crash in Ohio, according to the New York Times.

An excerpt:

Col. Earle L. Johnson, national commander of the Civil Air Patrol, was killed today when a twin engined Army C-45 plane which he was piloting crashed at suburban North Royalton a few seconds after taking off from Cleveland Airport, Army officials reported.

I don't think the source I used here for the story indicated the cause of the crash. You might want to do a follow up search on the New York Times to see if they did a follow-up story on the crash investigation.
