February 16, 1942: Georgia CAP Flight Commander Calls for Equality between Men and Women Pilots

On this date in 1942, a women Civil Air Patrol commander from Georgia called for equality between male and female pilots, according to the New York Times.

An excerpt:

Ann Johnson, flight commander of the recently formed women's unit of the Georgia Civil Air Patrol, appealed today for "equality with men in non-combatant military service."

June 21, 1946: South Dakota Wing Hosts Air Show Featuring a Jet

On this date in 1946, the South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol (my home wing) sponsored an air show at the Sioux Falls Army Air Base (now South Dakota Air National Guard Base) and featured a jet aircraft.

May 2, 1989: Georgia CAP Assists in Rescue of Teenage Plane Crash Survivor

On this date in 1989, the Georgia Civil Air Patrol participated in the successful rescue of a teenage girl who was the only survivor of family's aircraft near Dahlonega, Georgia.

And excerpt from the Los Angeles Times:

A 14-year-old girl crawled away from the burning wreckage of a small plane and waited 15 hours near the bodies of four family members for a rescue squad to find her, authorities said. The girl, hospitalized in serious condition with a broken shoulder, was found shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, covered with leaves to keep warm in the mountain cold. She was clad in a T-shirt and shorts. First Lt. David White of the Civil Air Patrol in Atlanta said the girl was coherent despite her ordeal but was overcome with grief over the deaths of her mother, stepfather, older sister and younger cousin.

April 28, 2007: George CAP Members Locate Missing Piper Tomahawk.

On this date in 2007, members of the Georgia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol located the wreckage of a missing Piper Tomahawk in northwest Georgia. The pilot did not survive the crash.
