He said the agency, aware that the snow was coming, prepositioned supplies and some National Guard troops.  The bad weather began January 18, peaked with a major storm Thursday and continued through the weekend. April 8, 1998: Alabama CAP Assesses Damage after F-5 Tornado

On this date in 1998, following powerful F-5 tornado in Alabama, the Alabama Civil Air Patrol assisted with aerial missions to assess the damage.

An excerpt from NOAA:
Aerial surveys conducted by the National Weather Service with the help of the Alabama State Troopers Aviation Unit and the Civil Air Patrol determined that the tornado that ripped across west Jefferson County Wednesday night, April 8 th was an F5 tornado, the most violent tornado that occurs. F5 tornadoes have winds in excess of 260 miles per hour. The F5 tornado is highest rating for the most violent tornado. The Fujita Scale runs from F0 for the weakest to F5 for the most intense.

The tornado track (map of tornado track, size about 236 kb) was approximately 30.6 miles long and at it's widest point was half a mile wide. After first touching down on the east side of the Warrior River in Tuscaloosa County, the tornado crossed into Jefferson County at 7:52 pm moving just south of the town of Scrap, just inside Jefferson County. It traveled east-northeast impacting Oak Grove, Concord, Pleasant Grove, Edgewater, McDonald's Chapel areas before ending in Pratt City. The storm reached it's strongest intensity producing F5 damage in the Concord area and the McDonalds Chapel/Edgewater area.

April 5, 2005: South Dakota CAP Assists in Black Hills Fire Spotting and Assessment

Black Hills of South Dakota Photo taken by Dou...Image via Wikipedia
On this date in 2005, the South Dakota Wing of the Civil Air Patrol was assisting state and federal officials in spotting fires and assessing damage in the Black Hills.

An excerpt from the Sioux City Journal:

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -- Dry conditions and a dry forecast make for conditions that could spark a lot of fires again in the tinder-dry Black Hills, but much of the firefighting effort going into the season is to keep the fires small. . . When a fire is spotted, fire engines and crews are dispatched immediately, as is an air tanker that can snuff out the flames, when the fire risk is high. . .  Much of the credit for keeping fires small goes to the local Civil Air Patrol. . . The volunteer CAP pilots, known best for finding missing or lost people, now take to the air when the weather and forest conditions are right for fires sparked by lightening.

March 27, 2009: Minnesotans and North Dakotans Thankful for CAP's Help During Flooding

North Dakota-Minnesota border at Red RiverImage by The U.S. Army via Flickr
On this date in 2009, Minnesota and North Dakota citizens and civic leaders thanked the Civil Air Patrol for its assistance during springtime flooding.

An excerpt from an NHQ release:
MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. – “Give them some direction and they hop to it.”
That’s what Fargo, N.D., resident Kent Wanner had to say about members of the Minnesota and North Dakota wings of the Civil Air Patrol responding to the record flooding along the Red River separating Fargo and Moorhead, Minn.
Since early Monday, Wanner and his neighbors of the Riverwood Housing Development have been battling the rising river with sandbags almost round the clock.
“This is a disaster that’s affecting all of us and the assistance of Civil Air Patrol is much appreciated,” he said. “I can tell you we’re all a little tired and nervous, but your assistance is much appreciated and has lifted our spirits.”
Phil McShane, who also lives in the development, had plenty of praise for CAP as well.
“Who are those marvelous young people? They’re polite, hardworking and their sense of community is amazing, What an example and inspiration to all of us.” McShane said.
Since Monday, approximately 200 CAP members from the border states have been building dikes along the river, despite freezing temperatures and blowing snow.

March 26, 2009: On the Ground and in the Air, CAP Aids in Red River Flood Relief

Red River of the North and 3rd Street SouthImage by jwgreen via Flickr
On this date in 2009, the Civil Air Patrol continued to assist in disaster efforts after the Red River of the North spilled its banks.

An excerpt from NHQ:
MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. – Citizen volunteers from Civil Air Patrol’s North Dakota and Minnesota wings are stepping forward to serve as flooding from the Red River threatens communities in both states.
CAP members are filling and stacking hundreds of thousands of sandbags near the civic center in Fargo, N.D., as well as outside a radio station in the city. CAP aircrews also are making damage assessment flights, as weather permits, to help protect critical infrastructure.
North Dakota and Minnesota have been hit with multiple weather emergencies in recent days as flooding persists along the Red River and its tributaries. A severe blizzard blew through most of the region earlier this week, blanketing the ground with thick heavy snow. Power lines are down in western North Dakota and a massive ice jam has blocked the Missouri River south of Bismarck, N.D., causing the evacuation of residents. Ice jams have caused several other smaller evacuations.

March 24, 2009: CAP North Central Region Assists with Northern Plains Flooding Missions

On this date in 2009, Civil Air Patrol units from across the North Central Region continued to assist the United States Air Force with flood overflights.

An excerpt from the North Shore Journal:

The North Central Region of CAP has been flying AFAUX missions since March 19, when the unit received word about the potential of flooding in the Red River area of North Dakota, as well as other surrounding areas in Minnesota and South Dakota. Since then, they have flown more than 30 sorties and captured hundreds of visual images to give emergency responders and on-scene commanders the most up-to-date picture of the affected areas. In the case of flooding, CAP imagery can alert decision makers of damage to vital infrastructure, which can ultimately help save lives.
