Lucas V. Beau, a retired Air Force major general whose career included service as a World War I pilot and as commander of the Civil Air Patrol, died Wednesday at Sibley Memorial Hospital here after suffering a heart attack. He was 91 years old.

April 30, 1956: Most CAP Units Not Chartered

On this date in 1956, the Civil Air Patrol's national commander noted that less than a third of all CAP units were actually chartered.

The National Commander, Maj Gen Agee, announced  out of 2300 units in CAP, only 685 units have been chartered as of 30 April 1956.

On this date in 1973, Maj. Gen. John F. Curry, the Civil Air Patrol's first National Commander died at the age of 86.

An excerpt from CAP Awards and Achievements booklet:

Under Curry’s guidance, wings were formed in every state. He helped mobilize 100,000 private pilots for non-combatant service; thus freeing military pilots for wartime duty. Although he only served a few months as National Commander, Maj. Gen. Curry’s organizational skills were influential in determining the future growth of this new resource. Thanks to the vision of John F. Curry and others like him, CAP remained throughout the war as an effective demonstration of volunteer spirit.
