August 28, 2006: ARCHER-equipped Airplane Brought in for North Dakota Search

On this date in 2006, an ARCHER-equipped Gipsland Airvan joined elements of the Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota Civil Air Patrol in the search for a missing pilot.

An excerpt from the Sioux City Journal:

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) -- Officials brought in an airplane with a special imaging system on Sunday to help search for a small plane that went missing in stormy weather on Thursday.  The Gippsland GA-8 Airvan, an Australian-made aircraft based in Minneapolis, is one of 15 aircraft stationed across the nation equipped with the ARCHER system, said Rick Robinson, a spokesman for the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services. ARCHER stands for Airborne Real-Time Cueing Hyper-spectral Enhanced Reconnaissance system. . . The search on Sunday, which was called off around 8 p.m., included two aircraft from North Dakota, five from South Dakota and seven from Minnesota. With two ground crews, there were a total of 70 Civil Air Patrol personnel involved in the search.

April 2, 2009: Dakotas, Minnesota Wings Continue Aerial Assistance for Flooding

On this date in 2009, the South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota Wings of the Civil Air Patrol continued to provide aerial assistance with flooding in the region.

An excerpt from NHQ:

MINNESOTA – The North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota wings continue to support flood relief efforts in northeastern North Dakota with aircraft and aircrews. 
Aircrews were providing aerial imaging of the confluences of several rivers along with a survey of the Red River in the Grand Forks area. The mission base opened at 8 a.m. April 2 with two missions assigned at the time. Operations ended with nightfall but are expected to resume at first light in the morning.

March 27, 2009: Minnesotans and North Dakotans Thankful for CAP's Help During Flooding

On this date in 2009, Minnesota and North Dakota citizens and civic leaders thanked the Civil Air Patrol for its assistance during springtime flooding.

An excerpt from an NHQ release:

MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. – “Give them some direction and they hop to it.”
That’s what Fargo, N.D., resident Kent Wanner had to say about members of the Minnesota and North Dakota wings of the Civil Air Patrol responding to the record flooding along the Red River separating Fargo and Moorhead, Minn.
Since early Monday, Wanner and his neighbors of the Riverwood Housing Development have been battling the rising river with sandbags almost round the clock. 
“This is a disaster that’s affecting all of us and the assistance of Civil Air Patrol is much appreciated,” he said. “I can tell you we’re all a little tired and nervous, but your assistance is much appreciated and has lifted our spirits.” 
Phil McShane, who also lives in the development, had plenty of praise for CAP as well. 
“Who are those marvelous young people? They’re polite, hardworking and their sense of community is amazing, What an example and inspiration to all of us.” McShane said.
Since Monday, approximately 200 CAP members from the border states have been building dikes along the river, despite freezing temperatures and blowing snow.

March 26, 2009: On the Ground and in the Air, CAP Aids in Red River Flood Relief

On this date in 2009, the Civil Air Patrol continued to assist in disaster efforts after the Red River of the North spilled its banks.

An excerpt from NHQ:

MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. – Citizen volunteers from Civil Air Patrol’s North Dakota and Minnesota wings are stepping forward to serve as flooding from the Red River threatens communities in both states.

CAP members are filling and stacking hundreds of thousands of sandbags near the civic center in Fargo, N.D., as well as outside a radio station in the city. CAP aircrews also are making damage assessment flights, as weather permits, to help protect critical infrastructure. 

North Dakota and Minnesota have been hit with multiple weather emergencies in recent days as flooding persists along the Red River and its tributaries. A severe blizzard blew through most of the region earlier this week, blanketing the ground with thick heavy snow. Power lines are down in western North Dakota and a massive ice jam has blocked the Missouri River south of Bismarck, N.D., causing the evacuation of residents. Ice jams have caused several other smaller evacuations.

March 24, 2009: CAP North Central Region Assists with Northern Plains Flooding Missions

On this date in 2009, Civil Air Patrol units from across the North Central Region continued to assist the United States Air Force with flood overflights.

An excerpt from the North Shore Journal:

The North Central Region of CAP has been flying AFAUX missions since March 19, when the unit received word about the potential of flooding in the Red River area of North Dakota, as well as other surrounding areas in Minnesota and South Dakota. Since then, they have flown more than 30 sorties and captured hundreds of visual images to give emergency responders and on-scene commanders the most up-to-date picture of the affected areas. In the case of flooding, CAP imagery can alert decision makers of damage to vital infrastructure, which can ultimately help save lives.

March 23, 2009: Minnesota and North Dakota Wings Assist in Sandbagging Operation

On this date in 2009, members of the Minnesota and North Dakota Wings of the CAP assisted with sandbagging operations along the Red River.

An excerpt from the North Dakota Wing: via NHQ:

The threat of flooding in the Fargo area drew more than 50 members of the North Dakota and Minnesota wings up to 250 miles to aid in the effort to keep the Red River from overrunning homes, businesses and towns.  Several ground teams have been dispatched to local houses and troubled spots.  Once members checked in, they were dispatched within minutes to assist with sandbagging.
