May 1, 2006: President George W. Bush Meets with Maryland CAP Cadets

On this date in 2006, President George W. Bush met with Civil Air Patrol Cadets from the Maryland Wing and announced several educational initiatives.

An excerpt from the Maryland Wing of the CAP:

President Bush greeted members of the Maryland Wing of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) following a speech he made about education initiatives at the Parkland Magnet School for Aerospace Technology in Rockville, Md.


"Thank you for encouraging your children to aim high," said the President, who was accompanied by U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings.

After noting that he saw CAP cadets in the room and calling out "Civil Air Patrol" to invite them to have a picture taken by a member of his staff, Bush shook hands with the CAP members in attendance and posed for a picture with them.

Bush arrived in the afternoon at the middle school, one of three magnet middle school programs in Montgomery County that were funded by a $7.2 million federal grant.

April 6, 1954: Two Maryland Aircrew Members Die During Search for Military Jet

On this date in 1954, two members of the Maryland Wing of the Civil Air Patrol died while on asearch and rescue mission.

An excerpt from the Maryland Wing:

Capt. Anthony J. Synodinos, the mission pilot, and 1st Lt. Edward G. Conrad, the mission observer, were on a search and rescue mission on April 6, 1954 that stretched from Long Island, N.Y. to Langley Field, Va. for a missing T-33 military jet that was never found. They were both members of the East Baltimore Squadron and had been in the air for about an hour, searching the Upper Bay in heavy fog, when their open-cockpit Ryan PT-22 airplane crashed into the water at 1:05 p.m.

On this date in 2008, elements of the Maryland and Virgnia Civil Air Patrol Wings located a crashed private plane near Cumberland Regional Airport.


An excerpt from the Maryland CAP Wing website:

Civil Air Patrol located the missing A36 Bonanza aircraft at approximately 5:45 p.m. on February 22 three miles northeast of the Cumberland Regional Airport. CAP members from Maryland Wing and West Virginia Wing conducted the search along with the Maryland State Police. There were no survivors.
