On this date in 1986, Maj. Gen. Lucas V. Beau, one of the early commanders of the Civil Air Patrol, died in Washington, DC according to the New York Times.

An excerpt:

Lucas V. Beau, a retired Air Force major general whose career included service as a World War I pilot and as commander of the Civil Air Patrol, died Wednesday at Sibley Memorial Hospital here after suffering a heart attack. He was 91 years old.
