April 4, 1950: Minnesota Wing's Disney "Gremlin" Patch Approved

On this date in 1950, the Minnesota Wing received approval for their "Gremlin" patch.

The origin of the patch stems from a failed Disney project during World War II.

An excerpt from incountry.us:

In a major show of patriotism, Walt Disney Productions had been creating hundreds of emblems for the American military during World War II. Shortly after Civil Air Patrol came under control and direction of the Army Air Forces, Minnesota Wing submitted a request to Disney for permission to use one of their Gremlins in an emblem. Major Horace E Read, Minnesota's second?/third? Wing Commander, announced in March 1943 that the folks at the Disney studios had agreed to get behind Minnesota Wing's request and design an emblem featuring a Gremlin.

March 6, 1950: Time Reports on CAP's Lost Leopard Lookout in OKC

On this date in 1950, Time magazine reported that the Civil Air Patrol was one of a number of search and rescue groups that joined the search for a leopard that escaped from the Oklahoma City Zoo.

An excerpt from Time:

By noon the next day it seemed that half the citizens in town were out on the roads northeast of the city to watch the hunt. A good many, armed to the teeth and accompanied by a rabble of house dogs, joined in the search. The skirmishing took on the look of a Guatemalan revolution. Civil Air Patrol planes flew low. Cops, zookeepers, deputy sheriffs, volunteer gunmen and a detachment of Marine reservists with M-i rifles and walkie-talkie radios scoured the scrub-oak thickets, flushing out rabbits, house cats, and, occasionally, each other.
