March 17, 2001: Jessie E. Woods, Wing-Walker, CAP Pilot, Pioneering Aviatrix Dies

On this date in 2001, former CAP pilot, wing-walker, and pioneering aviatrix Jessie E. Wood died at the age of 92.

And excerpt from The Pioneers:

She stunted airplanes as a pilot, scampered about on wings, parachuted and dangled by her knees on rope ladders that swung beneath the biplanes. She was also a mechanic and later taught military pilots to fly, Woods flew with the Civil Air Patrol during WW II. She later became a commercial flight and ground instructor. In 1941, she and Jimmie leased Roddey Field, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and received governmental contracts for military flight training.

December 1, 2001: Because of 911 Tragedy, CAP's 60th Anniversary Celebration Postponed

Because of the 911 attacks and the nation's recovery, celebration of the Civil Air Patrol's 60th Anniversary was pushed back from  December 1, 2001 to March 2, 2002.

An excerpt from the CAP NHQ history website:

Saturday, December 1, 2001, was CAP's 60th anniversary.  A gala was planned for that day, along with a reception to be fittingly held at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.  But because of the tragic events and this nation on a wartime footing, it was decided, and rightly so, to reschedule it for March 2, 2002.

April 14, 2001: Arizona CAP Finds Wreckage of Fatal Cirrus SR20 Crash

On this date in 2001, the Arizona Civil Air Patrol located the wreckage of a Cirrus SR20 single engine aircraft that crashed near Tucson, Arizona, killing the pilot and two passengers from Wisconsin.

An excerpt from the Cirrus NTSB crash database:

Concerned family members reported the aircraft overdue when it failed to arrive as scheduled. Civil Air Patrol initiated a search and personnel located the accident site on April 14, 2001. The burned wreckage was located approximately 150 feet below the crest of a ridgeline in the Whetstone Mountains, at 5,200 feet mean sea level (msl). The accident site was approximately 52 nautical miles southeast of Tucson. Belen is located northeast of Tucson.

February 27, 2001: Civil Air Patrol Finds Downed Beach V35B in Utah

On this date in 2001, the Civil Air Patrol located the wreckage of a fatal airplane crash in Utah.

An excerpt from the NTSB:

On February 26, 2001, at 1429 mountain standard time, a Beech V35B, N4637M, was destroyed following impact with terrain during cruise near Green River, Utah. The non-instrument rated private pilot, the sole occupant in the airplane, was fatally injured. The airplane was being operated by the pilot under Title 14 CFR Part 91. The cross-country personal flight originated from Gunnison, Colorado, approximately 1 hour 45 minutes before the accident. Visual meteorological conditionts prevailed for the takeoff; however, the meterological conditions at the accident site are unknown. The pilot had not filed a flight plan; however, family members said the pilot was en route to Fresno, California.  Family members reported to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) authorities that the pilot had not reached his destination. The pilot was not using any FAA services at the time of the accident. An Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) signal was received by U.S. Air Force tracking satellites. The Civil Air Patrol located the downed aircraft on February 27.
